Victor Street
Victor Street
Victor street opened in 1915, and was named for Orville J. Victor, the innovator behind the "dime novel". He also wrote two books on American History. His wife, Metta Victoria Fuller, was among the first detective novelists in the United States. Their son Orville was a newspaperman and worked as the caretaker of Poe Cottage. He also served in the Spanish-American War in the 8th NY Infantry and is buried in the West Farms Soldier's Cemetery.
Where Victor and Morris Park meet, Downing's Brook once ran freely on its course toward the Bronx River. This brook still exists, and can be heard flowing in the sewer system in many areas of the neighborhood. Check out the Downing Brook Trail (Coming Fall 2022) to find out more.
The photo above shows a James Butler Store on the Southeast corner of the intersection. James Butler was once a major regional competitor to A&P grocery stores. The building in the photo still exists and many of the features of the original storefront can still be recognized today. Come check it out for yourself!
